THE BETTER BIKE SOCIAL

215 Mare Street,
London E8 3QE

INTRODUCING THE
BETTER BIKE SOCIAL

A pop-up festival of the bike; a gathering of multiple voices across a range of events, exhibitions, activities, seminars, group rides, and workshops.

The festival is a not-for-profit programme of inter-linked flash events and venues bridging the boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, with a single purpose to celebrate the many ways in which ‘BIKES MAKE LIFE BETTER’; an opportunity to bring a broad community of people together to exchange passions, interests, knowledge and experience across a spectrum of bicycle related themes.

The first programme of events took place from

Tuesday 30th January – Sunday 4th February 2024

This is a self-initiated, grass roots, not-for-profit cultural programme. The events will be largely free to attend through a simple ticket booking system, with a programme which will continuously evolve, and will ‘pop-up’ at different times of the year.

The BETTER BIKE SOCIAL will explore how pedestrian and bicycle prioritised city planning is better at creating more inclusive and accessible neighbourhoods.

We will study bicycle mechanics and repair techniques. We will exchange stories of our adventures. We will simultaneously explore the city with SLOW rides and the countryside with FASTER RIDES through organised routes and guided tours. We will dazzle with self build bike projects. We will have OPEN MIC events and debates. We will have round table discussions. We will exhibit local and international artists who capture bike culture. We will sell second hand and vintage pieces. We will show archived footage of classic races, alongside classic bicycle themed films….and much more.

Crucially, the programme will regularly invite contributions for participation from the public and organisations, in a number of the featured events including special editions of #fightclub, an ‘open-mic’ live debate, which will pitch cyclists, cycle clubs, and bike shops against each other in front of a live and participatory audience, as we explore how to do things better in the face of a climate crisis.

The programme will be launched in the coming weeks, including details of the opportunities to participate, with links to secure complimentary tickets. Watch this space.
